Vegetarianism Vs Veganism

What is the difference between vegetarianism and veganism? How are they defined, and what are the respective drawbacks and benefits of each one? We will explore these questions and more in this article.

Firstly, what is vegetarianism? Vegetarianism is a fairly catch-all term but is usually used as a shorthand for what is more accurately termed ovo-lacto-vegetarianism. Ovo means egg and lacto means milk, meaning that such vegetarians eat a diet which is inclusive of dairy products, although it excludes meat. There are also semi-vegetarian diets which allow for lighter flesh such as fish and chicken. The Macrobiotic diet is typically pescetarian (vegetarian with fish included).

True or strict vegetarianism is known as veganism to distinguish it from the more relaxed usage of the word vegetarian to mean ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Veganism excludes any sort of animal product, which usually means insect products such as honey, and extends to the realm of clothing (no leather, wool or silk), cosmetics (no animal tested products) and other things. Veganism is a dietary approach designed to reduce animal suffering to the minimum. Ovo-lacto-vegetarianism may be undertaken out of a certain amount of consideration for animals, or it may be done for health reasons.

There are many people who experience great health and wellbeing benefits from giving up meat and animal products. Meat is a very heavy food which takes a long time and a lot of energy to be digested, while other animal products are almost as heavy, and milk is actually partly indigestible! Though not all people report feeling better on a vegetarian diet, those who do usually report feeling even better than that on a vegan diet. Besides greater energy, more mental clarity and intuition is observed, and often a greater sensitivity and emotional openness.

Ovo-lacto vegetarianism is not an effective approach at reducing animal suffering, as cows and chickens are killed and caused to suffer greatly in the production of milk and eggs. Some believe that they need to eat animal products to survive, however it has been proven by experience that with a simple B12 supplement anyone can thrive without an ingestion of animal protein. Soy is a good protein source, however protein intake is actually not needed at the levels which most meat eaters consume it and may actually be toxic, acidifying the blood.

There are many different diets and equally many different reasons to choose them. Explore and test them out and see what results and sensations you get from each one.
