Shoulder Workouts - Discover How to Build Muscles Old School Style
Old school shoulder exercise
My friend was telling me about his shoulder workout the other day and he mentioned an old school shoulder press exercise he happened to discover.
We were talking about building muscle fast and the different things we do.
I point out, "came upon," due to the fact it's just how he fell into doing the exercise. After he mentioned it I divulged to him, I personally use to perform something along the same lines myself quite frequently. I often called the exercise a Pavel Press.
We ended up bringing up shoulder workout sessions and just how you don't ever observe various exercise movements during a workout session but just how this particular old school movement was considered the go to exercise once.
Sure, chances are you may see a number of fellas carrying out the occasional shoulder dumbbell press, although relatively uncommon do you ever observe it carried out with just one hand, and then rarely ever done with this classic old school technique.
The same thing goes with respect to standing verses seated. I can't recall the last time I stumbled across another person performing a standing military press. This is something I include in my shoulder routine on all the time.
If I can help it, I don't sit for any exercise. The same applies to my private training clients too. Standing exercises are always my first choice. If the exercise can be done standing and the person has the strength and health to do it, don't sit, stand.
Military Press Exercise Old School Style
The military press exercise is the best movement there is for building big shoulders. There are a few variations so technically that makes it a different exercise and can no longer be called a military press.
Lets just say this is a shoulder press variation.
But enough of that...
we are into building muscle not all that other fluff.
You want to know the best workout routine, stuff that will make you strong and look like you workout.
Take a look at some old side show pictures, these guys are all doing great feats of strength with one arm. These exercises are a great way to improve your strength and core stability. If you train on the machines this will hit the stabilizer muscles that you miss.
Single arm military press exercise
At one time this use to be a measure of a mans strength, so I think it is something worth adding to your workout routine.
The One Arm Military Press by Sig Klein (1937)"Before the Olympic lifts became the standard of amateur weight lifters, as far as champion caliber is concerned, the One Arm Military Press was one of the main tests of one's strength."
I know this exercise as the Pavel Press, but you can use a descriptive name if you prefer...
one arm barbell shoulder press.
This is how you do it...
1. first thing you need is a death grip on the bar
2. squeeze your thighs and buttocks
3. now press that barbell to the ceiling
This is a tough exercise but you work at it and your numbers will climb. You will build strong muscular shoulders too. I am not saying ditch the military press but this can be a nice change of pace.
Next time you are in the gym, grab an empty barbell and give this movement a shot. You will be happy with tresults.
